چکیده

In a tone language, such as Cantonese, both segmental and tonal distinctions between words are pervasive. However, previous work in Cantonese has demonstrated that in speeded-response tasks, tone is more likely to be misprocessed than is segmental structure. The present study examined whether this tone disadvantage would also hold after the initial auditory processing of a syllable had been done. Cantonese listeners were asked to make samedifferent judgments on two sequentially presented open syllables along a specific dimension (i.e., onset, rime, tone, or the whole syllable) according to an instruction which was visually presented at the acoustic offset of the second syllable. Manipulating whether the difference between two syllables was in onset, rime, or tone resulted in equally robust effects across the various decision tasks on performance, indicating that tone functions as effectively as segmental structure in spoken-word processing once the related information of a syllable is encoded.

Cross-language comparison of functional load for vowels, consonants, and tones

The notion of functional load (FL) quantifies the role a phonological contrast plays in keeping words distinct in a given language. Several studies have emphasized its potential impact on language evolution and acquisition, and FL has repeatedly been mentioned as a useful tool to supplement phonological descriptions for more than seventy years. It is nevertheless still rarely explored and this ...

Hemispheric Asymmetry in Processing Low - and High - pass Filtered

In auditory perception, a right hemisphere (RH)/left ear advantage for low-pass filtered stimuli and a left hemisphere (LH)/right ear advantage for high-pass filtered stimuli have been reported. Here we investigated how tonal language experience modulates this hemispheric asymmetry. We recruited Cantonese, Mandarin (tonal languages), and English (non-tonal language) speakers, and asked them to ...

Impaired phonological processing of lexical tones in Cantonese speakers with congenital amusia

Congenital amusia is a lifelong musical disorder. It has been found that tonal-language speakers with amusia are impaired in lexical tone perception. But it has also been found that tonal-language experience compensates the deficit in certain scenario, reducing prevalence rate of amusia in speakers of a highly complex tonal-language – Cantonese. Thus it remains unclear whether lexical tone perc...

Perception of lexical tone across languages: evidence for a linguistic mode of processing

Pairs of Thai tones were presented for perceptual discrimination in three linguistic contexts (normal speech, low-pass filtered speech, and as musical (violin) sounds) to tonal language speakers, Thai and Cantonese, and non-tonal (English) language speakers. English speakers discriminated the tonal contrasts significantly better in the musical context than in filtered speech, and in filtered sp...
